John Oliver Gives Some Long Overdue Respect to U.S. Territories

Did you know that people born in U.S. territories like Guam, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, and American Samoa cannot vote in presidential elections? I did not know that. Even worse: natives of American Samoa are not even considered American citizens! How does that even make sense? It’s got “American” right there in the name!

This is why people like John Oliver exist: to share important information that people should already know, but without making the recipient of said knowledge feel like a stupid moron. Yes, once again John Oliver is tackling a decidedly “unsexy” topic (like he did last week regarding America’s rapidly failing infrastructure),but as usual he does so in an undeniably amusing, informative fashion.

This week’s topic is “U.S. Territories,” or more specifically: “How the citizens of U.S. Territories are generally treated like crap by the American government.” Don’t believe me? Check out the laws that are still on the books regarding Guam. The ones that include phrases like “alien races.” That’s pretty unsettling to me, and this is information I didn’t even know about two hours ago! Damn you, John Oliver! Stop angrying up my blood with these stories of unfair practices that you broadcast to a global audience! (Just kidding; I hope this guy’s show runs for 20 more years.)

Loved the shout out to WrestleMania at the end. Especially considering the impact Samoans have had on the “sport”.
