John Legend and Ariana Grande’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Theme Is Surprising

When Disney released the final U.S. trailer for their live-action Beauty and the Beast earlier this week, part of what made it great was John Legend and Ariana Grande‘s rendition of the iconic title track. It sounded beautiful and powerful, befitting of a movie and song we hold dear to our hearts. But yesterday Disney released the full album track, and we have a feeling the reaction to it from fans is going to be split.

We have a feeling some of you are going to take issue with this version because we too are surprised by it. The problem is not with the singing, since Grande and Legend’s smooth voices both sound great (although, like with any cover of a song you love and know, the changes can be a little jarring at first). The issue comes from the backing track, which lacks the full orchestra that was present in the trailer, and instead is replaced by something that sounds like an American Idol performance that Simon would have been baffled by.

You can compare it to the original, sung by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson, here.

Who listened to that and thought, “Needs more keyboard!”

Now this new version isn’t terrible, and it’s far from the worst movie song remake ever (shout out to Fall Out Boy’s Ghostbusters theme!), it’s just not as powerful as we’d hoped it would be. It sounds a little too saccharine and simple, especially during the musical interludes.

But the good news is that based on the latest trailer, we expect Emma Thompson’s version in the movie (she is playing Mrs. Potts) to have the orchestra backing, which is more appropriate for a ballroom dance.

But what do you think of this version? Do you find it to be beastly or beautiful? Tell us in the comments below.
