John Carpenter Narrates Claymation Music Video About ’80s Action and Horror Movies

“I’m recording this because this could be the last thing I’ll ever say.  The city I once knew as home is teetering on the edge of radioactive oblivion; a three hundred thousand degree baptism by nuclear fire. I’m not sorry; we had it coming…”

John Carpenter is such a holistically spooky dude that even his voice the gives me the chills. That is why his presence is perfect in Gunship‘s dystopian claymation video for their retro-synth single “Tech Noir”. After the above spoken word introduction—that makes you feel like you are a prisoner in the wasteland of some William Gibson-esque sprawl—a claymation epic unfolds to the tune of Gunship’s best track.

The conceit of this video is actually really compelling: our real-life hero teleports into his VHS player to save an anonymous girl he presumably loves. Within the claymation world of his VHS screen, both he and the antagonists have the ability to shape-shift into various ’80s films. Thus, we get to see Robocop vs. Jason from Friday the 13th with guest appearances from Rocky Balboa, Hellraiser, Alien, He-Man, and Tenderheart Bear from Care Bears. It’s a super original take on a genre that has a lot of contenders, making the case for Gunship’s entry into the ring.

If you dig it, you can check out Gunship’s entire debut album—which we premiered recentl— below. Let us know if you are digging in the comments below, and which ’80s characters you would like to see in claymation form (Terminator!).
