Joel Hodgson Wants Mystery Science Theater 3000 to Return

It’s really hard for me to believe that it’s been 15 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 took the long way to Tipperary and aired its finale episode, a riff on the late-’60s Italian action movie, Diabolik!. The show about a guy and some robots sitting in space, making fun of bad old movies, has now been off the air longer than it was on the air, but it’s never lost its ability to elicit laughter and a whole new generation of fans have discovered it via DVD and streaming.

And it’s this continued love for the show that series creator Joel Hodgson hopes will translate into donations to a new Kickstarter to hopefully make at least three brand new, feature-length episodes of the show. Hodgson, who also played castaway Joel Robinson on the show’s first five-ish years, is hoping to raise $2 million for the project, which will not see he or successor Michael J. Nelson back in space. We’re talking new host, new Mads, and new episodes.

In the statement as part of the press release, Hodgson said, “I don’t think there’s ever been a show more dependent on its fans than Mystery Science Theater 3000. Twenty-five years ago, we asked our fans to ‘Keep Circulating The Tapes’ and sharing MST3K with their friends and family to help the show find its audience. Now, I’m hoping the fans will join me again to “Keep Circulating the URL” of our Kickstarter, so that we can bring MST3K back to life for a new generation.”

At least $2 million is needed for three new episodes, and $5.5 would be needed for a new full season. To contribute to the campaign and for updates, visit www.bringbackmst3k.com. The campaign began Tuesday and goes for a full month! Any excuse for new riffing is okay by us! Let us know your thoughts on this amazing news below!
