JK Rowling Destroys Another Fan Theory

JK Rowling has done it again, taking to Twitter to slash the dreams of fans and conspiracy theorists the internet wide. The theory on the chopping block this time is one that this reader was actually previously unfamiliar with but that makes a lot of sense when you have it explained thoroughly.

Was Draco Malfoy a werewolf?

According to Rowling herself, the answer is no.

Here are the basics of the theory: It’s a known fact that Voldemort would have Fenir Greyback (the werewolf who turned Remus Lupin) bite the children of witches and wizards who displeased him. That is, after all, how Lupin was turned. When Harry stumbles upon Draco in Knockturn Alley (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) and sees others commenting on his arm, he automatically assumes that it is because Draco has been made a Death Eater and now has the infamous mark on his forearm like the others. The theory posits that this is where readers make the mistake. It says, what if they were not commenting on a Death Eater mark and were instead commenting on the bite mark that Greyback gave Draco in retaliation for Lucius Malfoy’s ineptness as a Death Eater.

If you’re interested in further information on the theory – and you have the time this weekend to fall down a fan theory hole on YouTube – here’s a video for your enjoyment that goes into more detail.

Regardless of whether you subscribe to the Draco is a werewolf theory (or the Snape is a vampire theory she also kills in the same tweet) or not, there’s something wonderful about the fact that Rowling remains so invested in this world that she actively engages with fans through the wonders of the internet. This might also just push you back into the world of Harry Potter as the season turns, and we’re thinking of Halloween in the Great Hall again.
