Marvel Turns Jim Lee’s X-MEN Trading Cards into Variant Covers

In the early ’90s, Jim Lee became one of the most popular comic book artists in the industry during his fan-favorite run on Uncanny X-Men and his X-Men #1 relaunch, which is still one of the all-time bestselling comics. Lee left Marvel over two decades ago to cofound Image Comics before joining DC Comics. Considering that Lee has risen to become DC’s co-publisher, there’s no realistic chance that he will be contributing any new X-Men art at any time in the near future. However, Marvel has a way around that just in time for the new Astonishing X-Men series this summer.

Marvel has announced that the artwork created by Lee for an X-Men trading card set is being repurposed in July as variant covers on 29 different series. Most of the variant images have no specific link to their respective books, but there are a few that do. For example, Uncanny Avengers #25 gets the Rogue cover, Generation X #4 has Jubilee, Jean Grey #4 features Jean’s adult self, and Deadpool #33 features the Merc with a Mouth in his full ’90s glory.

Joining Lee on these trading cards is his longtime inker Scott Williams. The images were drawn on a smaller scale than either Lee or Williams normally used, but they are still very striking. Every cover has reportedly been digitally remastered, with new colors by Jesus Aburtov, Israel Silva, Chris Sotomayor, and more.
