JESSICA JONES Showrunner Looks Ahead To Season 2

Marvel’s Jessica Jones was a critical hit for Netflix last fall, but it wasn’t immediately picked up for a second season. That changed early Sunday morning when Netflix made the official Jessica Jones renewal announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour. And according to Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb, Marvel had no idea that Jessica Jones season 2 was happening until now.

“We learned about the pickup when you guys learned about it,” said Loeb. “We’re still in the stage of ‘YAY!’” But that seems somewhat unlikely considering that Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg was also on the panel with Loeb. At the very least, someone had to tell Rosenberg why she was coming to the TCA!

There isn’t currently a timeframe for Jessica Jones season 2 to begin production, and when Rosenberg was asked about the start of pre-production, she replied “I honestly don’t know, I have no idea. We’ll find out [soon] I’m sure.”

While the story details are far from settled, Rosenberg indicated that Jessica Jones season 2 will retain its focus on Jessica’s character development. “I think I just want it to be about her character. She’s a very damaged character, and that damage goes beyond Kilgrave. There’s a lot to mine from in her backstory and into her present day situation.”

Despite the events of Jessica Jones‘ Kilgrave storyline, there’s still a lot of material to mine from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos’ Alias comic book series. Rosenberg added “I will always use as much as I possibly can from the book… The MCU is very different in terms of its mythology from the [comics]. We’re probably not going to be able to do parallel storylines, but I take every little piece I can.”
