Last week, Marvelâs Jessica Jones debuted on Netflix to near universal acclaim and it was reportedly this yearâs third biggest Netflix launch. If Netflix keeps its tradition of fast renewals alive, then a second season of Jessica Jones could be announced before the end of 2015.
However, that wouldnât necessarily mean that Jessica Jones season 2 would be back in 2016. According to showrunner and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg, The Defenders team-up miniseries may have to go into production before any potential new episodes of Jessica Jones.
âThere are logistics involved, because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually,â said Rosenberg. âActually, I’m not sure; I’m not at all involved in those conversations, much to my dismay. The first question is whether or not we will even get a second season. The second question is, if so, when? Will it be before The Defenders or after? I’d certainly love it to be before but there are things that play into that â time, availability.â
Although Marvel TVâs Jeph Loeb recently denied that plans for Iron Fist had changed, thereâs been no public movement about casting for the title role or naming a showrunner for the Iron Fist series. There has to be an Iron Fist series before The Defenders, if the original intent of uniting Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist on The Defenders is still Marvelâs Netflix endgame.
Perhaps the late start to Iron Fist could mean that Jessica Jones Season 2 isnât as far off as Rosenberg believes. But as Rosenberg noted, she hasnât been included in those plans. That will have to change fairly quickly if Marvel TV wants Rosenberg back for another season of Jessica Jones.
