Politeness be damned. When something is really, really, really nice, why canât we just call it what it is: nice as f*ck. Take Jenny Lewisâ new supergroup trio, Nice as F*ck (with Au Revoir Simoneâs Erika Forster and The Likeâs Tennessee Thomas), for instance. When Lewisâ vocals shine throughâby way of that salient voice thatâs been matured and refined in Rilo Kiley and in a bunch of great solo albumsâwell, letâs just say the name is warranted.
Last night, NAF made their network television debut on The Late Show. Colbert introduced the three women, who all wore green jackets over shirts that said, âGive a Damn.â They opened with the chugging peace-and-love anthem, âDoor,â before transitioning into a bit of their politically charged track, âGuns.â
Both songs appear on Nice as F*ckâs self-titled debut record that they surprise released about a month ago. The trio first appeared together at an unannounced Bernie Sanders benefit in New York, and theyâve driven all kinds of hype since then. Joshua Tillman (a.k.a. Father John Misty) called them âobjectively the best all-female band in the last 25 yearsâ in a long, bizarre, and incredible essay that has since become NAFâs bio.
Could this be the socially minded, all-female group that finally fills the shoes long worn by Sleater-Kinney? S-K’s return to prominence in 2015, when they released LP No Cities to Love, was at least partially due to the fact that â[important issues had] been laying dormant and doesnât seem like anyone else is picking it upâ.â Maybe Nice as F*ck got the message. We certainly hope so, because we need more people like that.
