Was Jena Malone’s Role in BATMAN V SUPERMAN Just Revealed?

Recently in a big interview with EW, Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder revealed that actress Jena Malone would sadly be cut out of the theatrical version of the film, but confirmed that she would indeed appear in the R-rated director’s cut coming to Blu-ray later in the year. He also seemed to debunk months and months of speculation that she would be playing Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl, in the film, saying the following about Malone’s role: “She’s definitely not Robin or Batgirl.”

Having said that… it now appears that Snyder might have just been choosing his words with care. Just because Jena Malone isn’t playing Batgirl, doesn’t mean her pre-Batgirl civilian persona of Barbara Gordon isn’t in the movie, or maybe even her post Batgirl identity as the computer genius Oracle. And now there seems to be some solid proof to back this theory up. An official survey released to members of Warner Bros.’ “A-List Community” website has reportedly confirmed the that Malone is indeed Barbara Gordon after all. You can see a screencap of the image below:

The survey, which was originally shared on Reddit by user katniss_everjeans (love the username) shows all the major actors and characters in Batman v Superman, and then asks whether the user would like to see more or less of them in upcoming ads for the film. And right along with the usual names we know like Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, the survey also lists Jena Malone as Barbara Gordon. Oops.

With news that the character of Barbara’s father, Commissioner James Gordon, is going to be in Justice League and played by J.K. Simmons, could that mean the Gordon clan will have a bigger role to play in the upcoming movies? Barbara Gordon — either as Batgirl or Oracle — is one of the most important female heroes in the DCU and deserves a role on the big screen. And having Batgirl among the League would be a great way to make the JLA seem like less of a “boys only” club, that just lets one female join at a time.

The theatrical cut of Batman v Superman, sans Jena Malone, hits on March 25. The extended cut is expected later this year.

What do you think of Jena Malone as Babs Gordon? Are you excited about maybe seeing Batgirl finally kick ass onscreen? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
