Jeff Bridges Will Star in David Milch’s SHADOW COUNTRY

While Deadwood fans await any further signs of life regarding the long-awaited TV movie continuation, creator David Milch is focused on Shadow Country, an adaptation of Peter Matthiessen’s historical fiction novel about the shady character Edgar “Bloody” Watson. And while there’s currently no time table for Shadow Country to begin production, Milch has apparently already lined up Jeff Bridges to star as Watson.

The historical Edgar Watson was a sugar cane planter in Chokoloskee, Florida who was also said to be an outlaw with several murders attributed to him. Watson was allegedly killed by his neighbors in 1910 after a standoff. Matthiessen first wrote about Watson’s story in Killing Mister Watson in 1990, and followed up that book with two additional Watson novels: Lost Man’s River and Bone by Bone. In 2008, all three were reworked by Matthiessen into a single volume called Shadow Country.

The news about the Tron and The Big Lebowski star’s involvement came as part of a larger profile on Milch in The Hollywood Reporter which dealt with his financial difficulties. Prior to Deadwood, Milch co-created the iconic cop series, NYPD Blue; post-Deadwood, he created the HBO series John From Cincinnati and Luck, both of which ran for only a single season. It’s not clear whether Milch is looking to adapt Shadow Country as a TV movie or a miniseries.
