One day, a great film will be made about the various attempts to remake ’90s cult classic The Crow over the past 15 years. That movie is a lot more likely to happen than an actual remake of The Crow, which is seemingly cursed to never get made. The latest bad news surrounding this project comes from Deadline, which is now reporting that star Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy have both formally left the film, leaving it in limbo once again.
This news comes on the heels of Sony also probably withdrawing as as the film’s worldwide distributor. Production on the film was getting set to start within the next five weeks in Budapest, before it all came to a halt. The film has an October 11, 2019 release date that it is now unlikely to meet. Momoa has Aquaman hitting theaters this year, while Corin Hardy has The Conjuring spin-off The Nun coming soon.
James O’Barr’s 1989 comic book The Crow was first made into a film in 1994 with director Alex Proyas at the helm, in an adaptation starring the late Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a rock musician who returns from the grave to get revenge on the criminals who murdered him and his girlfriend. Lee who was tragically killed on set, giving the final film an eerie quality once released, given its subject matter. The film was a success, but three sub par sequels were released over the next few years, none matching the critical and commercial success of the first film. There was even a short lived The Crow television series.
Since the turn of this century, there have been plans to reboot the series from scratch, all with big names attached to the part of Eric Draven, like Bradley Cooper and Luke Evans, and each of those projects have fallen apart. The original The Crow was such a specific product of its time, from its production design to its ’90s alternative music soundtrack, that attempting to remake it seems like a foolhardy idea. While some superhero properties are perennial can can be rebooted several times over the decades with new spins put on them, it feels like The Crow was lightning in a bottle that shouldn’t try to be recaptured.
