So, things are getting weird(er) in Japanese fashion. This independent label called Phoca, launched in 2012 by Subaaki and Maiko, is putting out tote bags with furry cat testicles on them.
Yep, you heard that correctly. Furry cat testicles. Or nyantama, as they’re called in Japanese.
The brand usually specializes in animal designs featuring cute, frolicking kittens and bunny rabbits, but I guess they thought it was time to make a splash and surprise their customers and the rest of the world? Well… it worked! Amusement/embarrassment factor: 10. Good job, Phoca.
Not surprisingly, Twitter already has a whole hashtag dedicated to nyantama, where people have joined in by tweeting photos of their cats’ testicles, like this:

It’s pretty great.
Unfortunately you’ll have to wait a beat to own one of these special bags, but don’t worry, they’ll soon be available for purchase through Phoca’s online store. More immediately, Phoca will be selling them at the upcoming Design Festa in Tokyo on November 21 and 22. Hey, if you know someone who would get a good laugh out of one of these suckers, or better yet, actually use the bag in public, you should seek one out and surprise them. You know it’ll make their day, like it just did yours.
Alright, be honest. What’s your reaction to cat testicle tote bags? Would you proudly walk around with one? Reach out to me on Twitter with your thoughts, or make a comment below!
