Japanese DOCTOR WHO Parody is the Weirdest and Best Thing

Sometimes finding a thing on the internet is its own reward. I have no idea what this is or where it came from, but it’s the strangest and greatest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Popping up Tuesday on the YouTube page of user lepoissonriuge, the modest video description says the following: “Found a clip on old video tape 1970’s? 80’s?…like a Japanese version Doctor Who. Anyone?” I don’t know much about a lot of things, but I’m damn skippy this wasn’t made in those decades. This has the stench of modernity all over, but certainly it’s trying to evoke the 70’s or 80’s, and therein lies the fun.

The 3-minute vid finds our hero, Dr. Who, walking pleasantly through the woods (because there always is one) when he’s set upon by easily the leggiest Dalek (named Dalekor) you’ve ever seen, along with his nefarious gang of Kung fu-knowing Cyber Men. From there, Dr. Who puts on his fightin’ suit and begins to take out the foes, eventually employing his trusty Sonic Screw Sword. Dalekor! The Fiend!

This has to be one of the best-realized double parodies I’ve seen in a long time. Not only is it a fun nod toward Doctor Who, but it accurately skewers many of those old Japanese Super Sentai and later Mighty Morphin Power Rangers-type action programs. The Cyber Men bear a striking resemblance to the Putty Patrol and the way Dr. Who plays the Sonic Screw Sword certainly hearkens back toward the Green Ranger’s Dragon Dagger flute.

Whoever made this and when and why, they have a big ol’ salute from me, because it’s beautifully well-drawn and ridiculous, just like the best parodies ought to be.

UPDATE: The person responsible for this is a filmmaker in the UK named Joshua Kahan. Well done, sir!

Anybody notice that while the dalek had the usual toilet plunger attachment, the Doctor’s Sonic whatever was also made with one of those all plastic toilet plungers?

  5. Mark says:

Kind of reminds more of Kamen Rider the Power Rangers but that’s just my opinion.

  6. OMG! WTT?! (What The TARDIS?!)

I’m glad hohoho had subtitles, I really needed the laughter translated

  9. Nankintamasudare says:

Horribly made non-parody. Good parody employs good actors who can speak properly and good writers who can write properly. The clip shows evidence of either. It’s nothing more than a disrespect to Japanese culture.

  10. Elmo Glick says:

Who’s Dr. Who? Is he a dentist? Or a real doctor?

  11. Elmo Glick says:

What is middlesex? Is it like between the beginning and climax?
