Japan seems to have an obsession with KitKat chocolates (understatement), and after sifting through bags of candy this Halloween looking for them myself, I have to say I’m right there with them. Something about those flaky biscuit layers covered in chocolate is irresistible—I’m sure the catchy theme song has a lot to do with it.
The crispy chocolates are so popular that Japan has 5 specialty Kit Kat boutiques called Chocolatory shops. This year their special product of the holiday season is a limited edition gold leaf wrapped KitKat. There are only 500 of these golden treats available, each one of them lovingly wrapped by hand, and will set you back 2,016 yen ($16 US dollars).
If you join the Chocolatory membership program (and really, why wouldn’t you) the boutiques will be raffling off an actual 24-carat gold KitKat to one lucky member. This one isn’t edible so, what exactly would you do with this? Use it as a deliciously tempting but inedible paperweight? Pawn it to pay for even more KitKat? The possibilities are weirdly endless. I know if I won I’d leave it in my will so my grandkids can say, “Man, Grandma REALLY loved KitKat. Like, maybe too much.”
Japan takes KitKat love to the next level by incorporating special local and seasonal flavors like green tea and strawberry that are both tasty and compelling in color. Sweet summer flavors are great but they also push the flavor envelope with craziness like soy sauce and apple pie and carrot KitKat. (I’ll pass.)
