Sitting somewhere between Hipster Darth Sidious and Dr. Manhattan’s Avatar love child, the newly leaked photos of Jamie Foxx as Electro in Marc Webb’s upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are, well, lighting up the web today. Fans expecting the classic yellow-and-gold garb are in for a bit of a shock. Over the weekend, Foxx and the ASM2 crew took over Times Square to film some of the upcoming arachnid epic and now our curiosity is the richer as a result. Just how true to the comics is it? Here’s a side-by-side comparison of Foxx and the Ultimates version of Electro:

While I prefer his cheesier multi-color costume, I am impressed by the level of accuracy they were able to achieve (and thoroughly creeped out). Speaking with BlackFilm.com, Foxx himself elaborated on the costume:
“It wonât be green and yellow. It will be a different color. They (the producers) want something for the future. They want to have it more grounded and not as comic book-y, so it wonât be green and yellow. They want to try new things, like a liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happen. How did he become this way? So, it will be some new stuff.”
And, in case you’re curious, here’s an official synopsis of the film:
“In The Amazing Spider-Man⢠2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy â between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation canât come quickly enough. Peter hasnât forgotten about the promise he made to Gwenâs father to protect her by staying away â but thatâs a promise he just canât keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.”

This isn’t the offical costume. This is just the first look so dont get disappointed yet.
Oh and I’m not racist just really hate it when they change the ethnic origin would be the same as a white person playing Blade just wouldn’t be cool with me!

Although they are two very trivial things I don’t understand why Curt Conners was British? and Blonde? and why Electro is Black? Jamie Foxx is an incredible actor and Rhys Ifans too but just feel so far the casting for these movies have been dreadful and I mean even in regards to Andrew Garfield another good actor but just do not feel like he is Peter Parker! just a poor imitation with some funky hair!
Looks like Howie Mandel in Little Monsters…
I think it’s cool ,l like spider man and so do my kids 🙂
I think that Jamie Foxx is a fine actor ,I really enjoyed Django ,and he was awesome in Jarhead . I did not mean to come off petty or racist .I was just making a “what if ” point . I agree there is a lack of minorities in comics . If he plays it well ,they I am fine with it . Like I said I won’t judge until I see the movie .
Anyone who thinks jamie fox is a bad actor hasnt seen ray or django and is just complaining because he is black.. Hes a very accomplished actor and should be great for the new spiderman franchise which has been much better the the previous one… its about time we see more of these totally interchangeable characters {his storys would be no different if he were black from the start} being played by minorities. For those petty people saying how about if we make blade, cage, the black panther white… its not about race its about the fact that black and other minority characters are totally under represented in the comic world so get over it !! the movies are better of for it…. if they can act well and its not a major role or a character who needs to maintain their ethnicity because its a part of their character, then it doesn’t matter and it should be done more.. the different cultures will add so much to the franchise….
I think he is going to be a VERY GOOD VILLIAN!!!! Lovethe SPECIAL EFFECT’S guy’s!!!
Jamie Foxx is a great actor!
i am sure spider man 2 will be better then the first one!
can’t wait to see it.
It’s not really the look that’s a problem for me..it’s the actor.. Jamie Fox is a horrible actor with no acting ability… this might be the first and only spider-man movie i pass on because of him.. unless they kill off Electro early on.. too bad they didn’t pick someone else.. i think Tom Hardy would have been a better pick for the character of Electro.
@Gregg
Thanks for the info 🙂 Did not know that ,and now I do .
For some face makeup and LED lights, this isn’t bad, but I’m sure that there will be more refined CGI added later. Until then, I’m going to wait before deciding if I like the new Electro. I saw a few of my coworkers looking at other pictures online as I was walking into my office at DISH this morning, and many of them are as excited as I am to see this sequel. I even added The Amazing Spider-Man to the top of my Blockbuster @Home queue that I have through DISH, so that I can watch it again. Fortunately, they don’t have due dates or late fees, so I can hold onto TASM for as long as I want without hurry or worry.
So they went from green and yellow spandex to blue face paint and a black hooded sweatshirt with some stupid LEDs sewn into it. Same problem i have with the nolan batman movies, more realistic doesn’t always work in super hero movies. In my opinion Electro looks even stupider like this. Didn’t see the first spidey movie, wont see this one.
Am I the only one who thinks he looks like Howie Mandel in Little Monsters? Hoping Garfield dies and Fred Savage takes over.
@michaelalexkawa. They based Nick Fury on the Ultimate version which was black. AND they based the Ultimate version on Sam Jackson so it makes sense that he plays himself since the char was based off of him. TMYK!
Oh man, I am stoked. I’m glad they’re avoiding the goofy yellow and green suit. Even though I grew up with silly looking Max Dillion, I’ll get to see Delectro Unchained in a sleek better for zapping costume.
To be honest before I judge. I want to see the performance first .But now on to an issue that has been annoying me .Changing the race of a character ,just to have a ” cool black guy ” play them in the movies .First it was Nick Fury and now Electro . Question how many complaints would there be if they changed The Black Panther ,Cage , Storm ,or Blade . The G.I.Joe movie did the same and even the 1989 Batman movie .
Now if the actor played the character like the character should be ,I would be color blind and not care .But Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury as if Jules Winnfield is in charge of SHIELD . David Hasselhoff did a better job ,and that is the problem.
@vfefrenzy
“I see black man. Black man looks like Dr. Manhattan. Blackhattan!
Dr. Manhattan has a blue penis. Black people have big penises. Big blue penises!”
Congrats on having an entirely racially-driven comment. Double congrats on the triteness of your joke! 😀
I remember Electro as that lightening headed guy in the green and yellow suit. That would be so funny to see an actor wearing. But am glad that they have made it more villain and so much less comic.
I don’t know why…. But this feels racist….
Is this Spider-Man the Ultimates version? It seems odd that Sony would use the same version of the Marvel Universe that Marvel is using, since there’s no crossover (X-Men/Spiderman are Sony movies).
At least Dr. Blackhattan isn’t naked. I suspect his blue torpedo would be somewhat larger.
It’s always the Ultimates with the Marvel movies isn’t it? It wouldn’t be so bad if the Ultimates weren’t written like a bad CW show. The Avengers films and characters have been great though, so, who knows?
Looks good to me.
I hope people don’t get offended by a black man wearing blue face. It’s 2013 people!
Allow me to break the ice. My name is Freeze. Learn it well. For it’s the chilling sound of your doom.
Ugh… not a fan.
