James Wan is Officially Back to Direct THE CONJURING 2!

This is great news, horror fans: Saw and The Conjuring director James Wan will be returning to direct the sequel after all!

Wan caused a huge stir last year on the Insidious: Chapter 2 press tour by telling Moviefone, “I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. Conjuring and Insidious 2 are my two last scary movies.” A disappointing concept for fans, for sure, but understandable considering that Wan had worked in horror for the last ten years and was actively trying to not be pigeonholed. He has since completed work on Fast & Furious 7 which will be released in theaters in April of 2015.

Wan is not only confirmed as the director of the follow up to 2013’s smash horror hit starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga but has also signed an overall deal with New Line Cinema that includes developing horror, science fiction and comedy titles for the “House that Freddy Built.” New Line announced back in May of this year that it would once again be leading the charge for Warner Bros. on its horror content.

The deal with Wan, especially considering the mega success of The Conjuring spin-off Annabelle, would seem to make perfect sense for both the studio and the filmmaker with New Line president/COO Toby Emmerich telling Deadline, “New Line has always been a big believer in great filmmakers emerging from the horror genre, and he has the potential to grow like Frank Darabont did, from writing A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 to writing and directing The Shawshank Redemption. James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Bros or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan, and a reason for bringing him into the family. He’s the only overall director with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one.”

As a result of Wan’s busy schedule, The Conjuring 2 has shifted its release date from the previously announced October 23, 2015 to sometime in 2016.

What say you, horror nerds? Are you excited to see what else James Wan has in store for The Warrens? How about overall? What DC movie would you like to see him direct? Let’s hear it!

I haven’t seen him make anything decent yet. So I’ll hold back my excitement until that day comes…if it comes.
