James Gunn Showed Star-Lord’s Original Mask Might Have “Bugged” You

We all know Guardians of the Galaxy hero Peter Quill (sorry, I mean Star-Lord) was half terran/half something very old, but originally he was almost part bug too. Well, kind of.

The film’s director, James Gunn, took to various social media sites to share some original concept art for what Chris Pratt’s character would look like when wearing his mask, and while still generally the same, the specifics would have given it a dramatically different feel.

Star-Lord

#fbf Very early version of the Star-Lord mask. I wanted the eyes to be big, as if he was perpetually surprised, not your regular hero. We might have overdone it a bit here. #GotG #flashbackfriday

Um, yeah, overdone is probably a pretty good way to describe it, though you can understand what he was going for–an unconventional look for an unconventional hero. Unfortunately this first look makes Star-Lord look like a surprised bug. Here’s a look from the side.

This photo, with the red eyes inserted, really highlights that bug-in-shock look the original mask had.

Gunn is very active on social media, and it’s cool that we can get some fun stuff like this to hold us over until Guardians of the Galaxy 2 opens on May 5, 2017. (Wait, I have to wait until 2017! Oh c’mon!)
