Well, Rocket Raccoon might not have time to work out all of the minutia of life, but someone has to do it if we’re going to get the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel we all need so much. The good news is writer and director James Gunn has done it, and the script for the next film is complete.
Gunn took to his Facebook page and posted this photo, along with the note, “Coming to you presently, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista (Batista), Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel.”
Based on this image of the front cover, this was the fifth draft of the script, and from Gunn’s note everyone from the original is set to return! Or are they? Where is Bradley Cooper‘s name!? What about Rocket! And where is Karen Gillan! What is going on! Someone fix this!
Don’t worry — when asked by a fan about the missing actors, Gunn said it was simply a matter of them not being on Facebook. Even more interesting was this little nugget from the director: “Also had to leave a couple off this list who haven’t been officially announced.” Ooooh. Plenty of time for us to fantasy cast.
Gunn is very active on social media, often interacting with his fans. (I know because he once responded to one of my stories here on Nerdist and I put it on my business card. Just in case…hi James)! He responded to some questions fans had, and from those answers we got some other fascinating information about the sequel and the process that went into writing the script.
For instance, why all the colors assigned to the different drafts? “When a crew or cast member gets a screenplay, it is white,” Gunn explained. “Every additional draft is assigned new colors so they get only the pages that changed printed on a new color, that they can insert, not the entire screenplay,” he said.
He was also asked if this was really the final final draft, or if other could be changes made. He said, “I always make very tiny changes along the way, but this is essentially the final draft.”
Someone also complimented him on the amount of work he must have put into the script if it required five drafts. “The drafts are the easy part,” Gunn said. “By the time I started, I had a 70 page treatment I had gone over and over for a year.” Note that the first draft is dated June 2, 2015, so that’s a significant amount of time with the story.
As for that “awesome” music that is so closely associated with the movie, Gunn revealed that all of those choices have been made as well, saying, “Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is already finished – all the songs are in the script you see above.”
In case you can’t wait for Gunn’s Awesome Mix, Vol. 2, we made one of our very own:
I’ll just line up for tickets now. Oh, wait, it doesn’t come out until May 5, 2017. In that case I guess I’ll wait a few days.
