James Gunn Hints at RAVAGERS Film Featuring the Original GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

The characters from Marvel Comics‘ cosmic team the Guardians of the Galaxy are now a household name, on par with Captain America and Hulk, thanks entirely to the insanely popular pair of films from Marvel Studios. But the characters in the movie Guardians were not who made up the team line-up for the majority of the group’s nearly fifty year history in the comics. The original Guardians of the Galaxy were a group of heroes from the 31st century, and only Yondu (Michael Rooker) from the first two films was a member of that particular team.

However, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, director James Gunn did actually introduce other members of the classic Guardians line-up, as members of Yondu’s former team of Ravagers, as a nod to the original comic book Guardians. Among those cameos were Starhawk, Charlie-27, Alteta, and Martinex, played by Sylvester Stallone, Ving Rhames, Michelle Yeoh, and Michael Rosenbaum, respectively. But with such A-list talent playing these roles, does that insure we are getting a spin-off featuring these characters?

We one time made up a vintage cast of these characters; check it out here!

While speaking with Collider recently, James Gunn explained that he’d like a standalone movie for the Ravagers line-up that we see at the end of Guardians Vol. 2 – who are of course versions of the original comics line-up. Gunn said “There’s always discussion with Ravagers — it would be The Ravagers (we are guessing he means the movie’s title would be The Ravagers, and they wouldn’t have the name Guardians of the Galaxy in the title in any way). It’s always a possibility. I would be excited.”

The original Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in 1969 in the pages of Marvel Super Heroes #18. The characters were from the 31st Century, and they appeared sporadically throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Then in 1990 they were finally given their own comic book by writer/artist Jim Valentino, which lasted five years and a healthy 62 issues.

If we got a movie featuring these characters though, expect it to be pretty different from the classic comics. For starters, in the Marvel Comics Universe, the original Guardians were in the future, and clearly they are not in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their reason for banding together was to defeat the alien race called the Badoon from conquering what’s left of the human race. If they were to make a Ravagers film, I highly doubt it would be that Earth centric at all.

It’s possible that a movie featuring the Ravagers, should it get made, would be the least like the original comics that inspired them than any MCU movie to date. Nevertheless, as different as it might have to be, they could keep the same team dynamic and basic alien background for each character.

What would you want to see in a feature film starring the original Guardians, a.k.a. the Ravagers? Be sure to let us know down below in the comments.
