James Cameron’s AVATAR Sequels Might Be 3D Without Glasses

Eight years ago, James Cameron‘s Avatar revolutionized 3D films and paved the way for the resurgence of movies using that technology to sell tickets. And if Cameron has his way, Avatar 2 and the rest of the upcoming sequels will once again make a technological jump by leaving out the 3D glasses altogether.

According to a report on Inquisitor, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has extended its partnership with Christie Digital for an additional five years with plans to roll out the company’s new RGB laser projection systems that can provide 3D images without the glasses. Christie Digital’s CEO Jack Kline also indicated that his company and Lightstorm will also collaborate in their research and development for new 3D technologies as well.

It’s an exciting prospect, but not entirely guaranteed. Keep in mind, what Lightstorm and Christie Digital are planning would require an entirely new projection system that can handle “60,000 lumens to provide bright images at incredibly high frame rates.” That’s an upgrade that many theater owners may balk at, even though the original Avatar was the highest grossing domestic film until Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released.

If we were to hazard a guess as to how this will play out, we suspect that only a limited number of theaters will initially sign on for Cameron’s proposed 3D projection upgrades while the rest of the theater owners wait to see how moviegoers respond to the changes. There is something inherently appealing about the idea of watching three dimensional imagery without the glasses, and it could potentially reignite demand for 3D much in the way that the original Avatar did. It could also potentially lead to more expensive 3D ticket prices, especially if the experience is a noticeable improvement over the current technology.
