It will have been almost a decade between the premiere of Avatar and the first of its three scheduled sequels — fans won’t be able to experience Pandora on the big screen until at least winter of 2017. While the movie may be a long way off, you can still get your fill of original Avatar content, thanks to a new agreement between 20th Century Fox and Dark Horse Comics. The announcement was made during this year’s NYCC by Avatar director James Cameron himself. In the video above, he promises the books will delve into “new storylines from the past, present, and future world of Avatar.”
Even with only one film to base these comics on, there is still a Pandora’s box of possibilities. The discovery of the Na’vi’s planet and unobtanium by the Resources Development Administration could be a story, or how each of the human characters in the movie got to where they were, and what drove them. And with a world like Pandora, there is so much to build upon — the history of the Na’vi, as well as their myths. How did the Tree of Souls come to be? This is a chance for Dark Horse to duplicate the success they’ve had building stories upon stories for Star Wars lore.
So what do you think? Will Dark Horse be able to quench your thirst for Pandora for the next two years? Or is that an unobtainiumable goal? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
