The biggest mystery following Spectre is whether Daniel Craig will reprise his role as James Bond for the fifth time. In an often quoted interview with Time Out, Craig said that he would “rather break this glass and slash my wrists” than return as 007. But the producers of the Bond movies aren’t ready to give up on Craig just yet.

Via Variety, executive producer Callum McDougall told BBC that “We love Daniel. We would love Daniel to return as Bond. Without any question he is absolutely Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli’s first choice. I know they’re hoping for him to come back.”

To put Craig’s run in perspective, consider this: the Bond movie franchise has been around for nearly 55 years and Craig has been Bond for the last decade. On top of that, Craig’s 007 adventures have been among the most successful Bond films, which certainly explains why the producers are so reluctant to simply let him go.

It’s hard to tell if Craig’s return is in the cards when even the producers aren’t sure if they can convince him to do another film. If Craig really feels like he’s done, then it may be for the best. Some of the previous Bonds stayed with the role too long. And because there have been six Bonds to date, it’s already been proven that the franchise can survive the departure of its signature star. Plus, casting the new Bond is one of our favorite pastimes. If Craig doesn’t want to come back, we’re still pulling for Idris Elba! But there are many actors who could potentially step up and become the new 007.
