The only polka music in our lives comes from Weird Al’s medleys, but after hearing the infectious premiere track off the upcoming soundtrack for Netflix’s The Polka King, we think we’ve been missing out all these years by not expanding our horizons to more traditional songs. Basically, we can’t get enough of “Everybody Polka Polka” from The Jack Black Polka Band.
Ahead of next month’s biopic The Polka King, starring Jack Black, Lakeshore Records has announced the release of The Polka King—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album includes a collection of classic polka songs re-imagined by The Jack Black Polka Band. In addition to Black, the group features members of the Jan Lewan Orchestra and other prominent polka players. You can see the album’s entire track list below.
Listen to “Everybody Polka Polka†before the entire album is released digitally on January 5. For fans of physical media, the CD hits stores the same day the movie comes to Netflix, on January 12. Lakeshore Records says a vinyl release will be announced at a later date.
The Polka King was written and directed by Maya Forbes (Infinitely Polar Bear) and her husband Wallace Wolodarsky (The People vs. O.J. Simpson), and is based on the documentary The Man Who Would Be Polka King. (Read our review of The Polka King from Sundance here.) The movie also stars Jenny Slate, Vanessa Bayer, Jason Schwartzman, and J.B. Smoove.
In a press release, Black said he had to play Lewan after seeing the documentary and thoroughly enjoying Lewan’s music, costumes, and accent. He also said that between this “little masterpiece” of a film and the soundtrack, they are “bringing polka back!”
We’re glad to hear some polka music; we just didn’t expect it would be Jack Black who gave it to us.
