J.Scott Campbell Gives Riri Williams IRON MAN Cover a New Take

Wednesday means new comics on the shelves, and that means there’s a new edition of Comics Relief to be had! To start things off today, we have artist J.Scott Campbell responding to internet critiques and giving us a new rendition of a Marvel hero, one that’s leaning a little less on the sexy this time. Read on for all the details!

Artist J. Scott Campbell reveals alternate Riri Williams Iron-Man art

A few weeks back, artist J. Scott Campbell got into a wee bit of trouble with his variant cover exclusive for the new Invincible Iron Man series, featuring teenage genius Riri Williams wearing Tony Stark’s old suit of armor. Many fans protested that his drawing was too sexy for a 16-year-old character, and the cover was scrapped (Imagine what 2016 would say about Campbell’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer covers from 1999).

Although the cover is still scrapped, Campbell took it upon himself to draw a new Iron Man image of Riri, and this one was met with applause from almost everyone. Although it was just for his own enjoyment and not for any official new cover (yet), the artist posted it to his Twitter, which you can see above.

DC Reveals full Justice League vs. Suicide Squad artists line-up

Starting next month, DC is starting their first big event of the Rebirth era, with the Justice League vs Suicide Squad miniseries from writer Joshua Williamson and a bevy of well-known artists. According to DC, the weekly miniseries will feature a lineup of artists who “perfectly capture the kind of widescreen, blockbuster style action that’s only fitting for this kind of epic story.”

A different artist will handle each issue, and now we know the complete artistic line-up, which is as follows:

  • Issue #1 (Dec. 21): Jason Fabok (Justice League, Detective Comics)
  • Issue #2 (Dec. 28) Tony S. Daniel (Batman, Deathstroke)
  • Issue #3: Jesus Merino (Justice League)
  • Issue #4: Fernando Pasarin (Action Comics)
  • Issue #5: Robson Rocha (Green Lanterns)
  • Issue #6: Howard Porter (Grant Morrison’s JLA)

Penny Dreadful will continue on in comic book form

This past summer, the gothic horror series Penny Dreadful ended on Showtme after an all-too-brief three season run. While the finale brought closure to one of the main storylines, that of Eva Green’ Vanessa Ives, there were still many loose threads to be tied up that would be left to the viewer’s imaginations. Or, as it turns out, to comic books.

UK Publisher Titan Comics revealed plans this week for a new Penny Dreadful comic book series that will take place six months after the show’s conclusion, and serve as a de-facto “Season 4.” For more on this new series, including what we think should be included, be sure to click on our full story here: [Nerdist]

Gothic Anno Dracula series of novels getting Titan Comics adaptation

Speaking of Titan Comics (and Gothic/Victorian characters for that matter), the publisher announced at MCM London Comic Con last week that they will be publishing a new comic book series based on Kim Newman‘s award-winning Anno Dracula series of novels, written by Kim Newman himself, and drawn by Paul McCarthy (no, not that one).

The novels depict an alternate history in which the heroes of Bram Stoker’s novel fail to stop Count Dracula’s conquest of Great Britain, resulting in a world where vampires are common and increasingly dominant in society. The original book spawned several sequels. The first chapter should be coming in 2017. [Bleeding Cool]

Marvel will spin off two new series out of Monsters Unleashed

Marvel’s upcoming Monsters Unleashed event is going to bring back all the old school giant monsters from the Jack Kirby days of the early ’60s, and pit them against the heroes of the Marvel Universe. And now the publisher has confirmed that two new series are going to be spinning out of MU. “We have plans to spin at least two series out of this event,” said Marvel’s EIC Axel Alonso. “Because we have faith in what we’re doing. We feel we have at least two breakout characters moving out of this event that will be launching ongoing series with.”

So just who are those characters that will soon be starring in their own titles? Still not known. But isn’t Fin Fang Foom long overdue for his own book? Monsters Unleashed #1 is written by Cullen Bunn with interior art by Steve McNiven, and arrives in stores on January 18. Two issues will arrive each month in February and March. A number of tie-in one-shots will also arrive in early 2017. (Sidenote: anyone else think this might tie into what R.L. Stine is doing?) [CBR]

Alex Ross pays tribute to Jack Kirby with new Avengers cover

The original Avengers issue #4, way back in 1964, introduced Captain America to the then-new super group, thereby solidifying the team as the greatest in the Marvel Universe. Now with the latest Avengers series, artist Alex Ross pays homage to Jack “King” Kirby with a similar cover, only this time featuring the latest team line-up of Spidey, Hercules, Vision, Captain America (Sam Wilson) and the Wasp. You can see the new cover above. [CBR]

Batman’s “Court of Owls” storyline to get an adult coloring book all its own

One of the highlights of the New 52 era of Batman comics from DC was Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo‘s introduction of the Court of Owls. And now, thanks to a listing found on Amazon, we’ve discovered than the Batman epic is coming soon as an adult coloring book. The book is scheduled to come out in June of 2017, with original images by Capullo and inker Jonathan Glapion.  [Bleeding Cool]
