Being a zombie in iZombie isn’t only about assembling delicious-looking, brain-based meals. There are crimes to solve, diet-induced personalities to wrangle, killers on the loose, and experiments to conduct. The second season of The CW series has piled on the problems for Liv and co.: The lack of a successful cure to the zombie virus is a continual headache, Major’s the Chaos Killer, Agent Bozzio is getting suspicious—it’s all leading somewhere. Series executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright appeared at WonderCon along with the cast, and they dished on what to expect from the remainder of the season.

The good news? The season two finale will answer lingering questions in a huge way. Thomas said, “This is one big story, and you’re going to get big answers. I’m not saying every single storyline will be wrapped up, but the big ones will be. The big Chaos Killer/Max Rager [story] will come to an end and even the hanging chad of the Meat Cute investigation will come to a head. We will largely clear the deck of all the major story ideas that we’ve had this year. And last year we thought we had a big season finale, but this year dwarfs it. It was incredibly ambitious, and I’m so happy with it. It’s the closest we’ve come to a zombie movie. Usually we have one member of the living dead in any episode, but in this one, there are many more. It will be fun.”

Ruggiero-Wright agreed the season finale is “crazy.” In regards to the zombie movie description, she said, “We were definitely jonesing for that. I’m not going to call it a zombie movie because we didn’t get the line, ‘They’re coming to get you, Barbara’ which I was desperate to get in there. I told them we didn’t get any zombie movie cred unless that happened. But it’s definitely more of a movie.”

By the time the season ends, the world still isn’t in on the zombie secret. In fact, Ruggiero-Wright said, “It’s still a secret to several people.” And maybe the progress of the cure will affect that. Thomas said, “There will be serious ramifications for the cure. You know there has to be, otherwise our show is over. Those repercussions will overhang. That will still continue to be an element of the show moving forward. ‘If you take the cure, this will happen’ and you will have a bit of a Sophie’s choice. That doesn’t get wrapped up.” We saw a little bit of the possible consequences with Blaine’s memory loss.

The two-part finale will also bring in some A+ guest stars. Robert Buckley (Major) mentioned that Rob Thomas veteran Ken Marino would be visiting the series, remarking “He kills it. He’s so great.”

“Ken Marino is playing Washington’s top defense attorney, and he knows it,” Thomas said. “We love Ken. The fun part about that episode is John Enbom, who was my partner on Party Down and was a writer for Veronica Mars, joined the staff for the last six episodes. So it was Enbom writing for Ken Marino, and it was like Ken was his muse. Those scenes with Ken are some of my favorite in the show. Ken is a funny guy and elevates any material.”

Thomas also revealed, “Enrico Colantoni comes back in a bigger, juicier bit in the episode.”

And then there’s the other Rob Thomas. They needed a jingle for Max Rager, and Thomas direct messaged the singer Rob Thomas on Twitter and asked if he’d perform it. The conversation led to musician Thomas appearing in the season two finale, playing himself.

iZombie’s Thomas said, “He’s a fan of the show, and one of my favorite moments of him coming to do the show was when we sent him the script and he wrote back, ‘Listen, I don’t want to read this yet because I haven’t seen the episodes before it, and I don’t want to be spoiled. Is there any way I can watch the other ones first?’ [I told him] ‘I’m afraid you’re going to have to read this episode because we don’t have those other ones ready.'” Surely we can all relate.
