Dru Johnston (The Chris Gethard Show, UCB Theatre) introduces Craig to the local sketch show Almost Live! which pushed SNL back half an hour in Seattle during the ’80s and ’90s. Dru and Craig discuss the show that brought Bill Nye the Science Guy to life, talk about the worst basketball coach EVER, and freak out about the movie trailer for Freejack.
Sad footnote to all this: RIP, Ken Schram. 🙁 http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Longtime-KOMO-reporter-commentator-Ken-Schram-passes-away-260544511.html
I remember watching this show. I laughed so hard when it was on. Loved loved the Lame Show. I always assumed that everyone had a local show like this before SNL. I was surprised that they didn’t.
Almost Live had a season or so on Comedy Central I believe. Could have been another channel but it did get a national airing. I remember the S.P.R.O.U.T.S: Special Police Regiment for Ousting Uncool Things and Stuff. I was living near LA at the time.
At least two seasons of ALMOST LIVE on Comedy Central nationally.
Big props to giving this show some love; I just saw a re-run the other day, and forgot how good it could be when it was good, and why, for a while there, I genuinely preferred it to SNL.
This podcast episode couldn’t get much closer to home. Hi from the western edge of Issaquah. 🙂
