It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To… A TV Show

The finale of The Oprah Winfrey Show — not a nerd thing, for sure, but you’ve probably heard of it sometime in the last 25 years — airs today, so it seems like a good time to discuss all-time series finales. Now, admittedly it’s very hard to compare something like The Wire to Oprah, but everything’s gotta say goodbye, right? That’s the commonality here.

Speaking of The Wire (on Damon Lindelof’s list of best TV shows of all-time, if not the best), its finale was fairly strong. Here’s one clip:

I’ve cried before watching that. No joke.


People always speak of the group hug of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, seen here:

 

The M*A*S*H finale, which for years was the only single TV episode that could stay ahead of Super Bowls in all-time Nielsen ratings, is another popular choice:

People are split on The Sopranos’ fade to black, but it needs to be included on such lists:

Newhart — “It was all a dream!” — crops up on every finale list you’ll find on the Interwebs:

    Not a huge fan of the Shield’s final sequence, but the end credits was probably the only time I have seen a show conclude with a nice summary and the perfect song to cap the finale:
