It’s-a-Real! Super Nintendo Classic Edition Coming in September

When it was announced last year that Nintendo would be releasing a sort of kitschy device that looked like a miniature version of their original Nintendo Entertainment System and came with 25 games loaded in, our nostalgic brains all jumped for joy. It was definitely very fun to play the old favorites, though the incredibly short controller cord and the fact that almost nobody could buy the darn things dampened the joy a bit. That didn’t stop us from hoping against hope we’d see a Super Nintendo Classic, and we even hoped we’d see 25 particular games. Now, folks…the glory is real.

That’s right, Nintendo tweeted out a photo of the new SNES Classic, set to hit stores on September 29. While we don’t have the full list of games yet, we do have a few absolute must-haves listed on the side of the box. You got your Super Mario World, you got your Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, you’ve got your F-Zero, you’ve got your Donkey Kong Country. All amazing and completely must-have games for the system. Though not shown on the box, the tweet also lists Earthbound. So, a great start.

We also have Super Mario Kart, which is arguably the game-changer for the system. And in order to make that game more fun to play, they’re including two controllers, because what fun would be destroying the computer when you can make your brother incredibly angry at you for constantly shooting a red shell at him when he’s about to win? (This can’t have just been me!)

Super Mario Kart Honestly, do I really need to explain why this is on the list? It's a no-brainer! This game single-handedly reinvigorated the racing genre, created the subgenre of "Kart" racing, which allowed all kinds of IP thereafter race around in different vehicles, and allowed this to be Nintendo's most consistent and fun series of games. I want to play it right now.

And finally–really burying the lede here–Nintendo is putting Star Fox 2, the unreleased 1995 sequel to the original 1993. It was fully completed and ready to ship, but Nintendo decided to pull back and wait for the impending Nintendo 64 to come out. Obviously, we all remember the greatness that was Star Fox 64, but we never got to play what could have been an awesome SNES sequel…officially anyway.

While not in the tweet, a complete list of games was released, consisting of 21 titles.

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
EarthBound
Final Fantasy III
F-ZERO
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X
Secret of Mana
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Yoshi’s Island

I have to say…we were pretty darn close in our choices. We selected 25 games, so that’s four more than there actually are on the system. Who could have thought Star Fox 2 would have been on there? We also didn’t have either Kirby game, nor Punch-Out, but otherwise we were pretty spot on. So, while the real system doesn’t have Chrono Trigger, Earthworm Jim, Harvest Moon, Mortal Kombat, Super Bomberman, Super Star Wars, TMNT, or Zombies Ate My Neighbors, we’re pretty darned proud of how close we were to the real thing.

Retail for the system will be $79.99. Pretty good for all the memories, yeah? What games would you have liked on the SNES Classic? Are you definitely-for-sure gonna buy it in September? Cuz…we sure are. Let us know in the comments below!
