How Disney Is Expanding On THE LAST JEDI

Given that Lucasfilm lined up Rian Johnson for a brand new Star Wars trilogy before anyone outside of the company saw The Last Jedi, it seems safe to assume that the company didn’t think the film would be controversial among fans. That sequel received a less-than-welcome reception among some viewers, and outright hostility from others. Even The Last Jedi‘s defenders would probably admit there are certain aspects that could have been improved upon. It appears that Marvel and Lucasfilm have kept some of that criticism in mind for the new comic book adaptation of The Last Jedi. Today’s Nerdist News is looking at the comic and examining how the changes affect the narrative of The Last Jedi.

Join host and the last high stakes player on Canto Bight, Jessica Chobot, as she takes us through some of the more intriguing differences between the comic and the film that inspired it. Was Vice-Admiral Holdo being too flippant with Poe during the movie? That’s addressed by Holdo telling Poe that she has plan much earlier. Our old favorite, Admiral Ackbar, even gets to say a few words before his untimely demise.

The comic also gives Leia more context during her “Mary Poppins” moment in space, and drastically shortens the time spent in Canto Bight to just a few pages. The adaptation even gives Luke some time to mourn his closest friend’s demise and further explain his reasoning for going into hiding. Overall, each tweak adds layers and depth to the story that unfolded onscreen. It doesn’t mean that the changes will be recognized in Episode IX, but it does appear to demonstrate that Lucasfilm isn’t simply shrugging off the earlier criticism.
