Is a SUSPIRIA Remake with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson Happening?

It’s certainly nothing new to see horror movies remade left and right—heck, a new version of Cabin Fever was released just a few weeks ago and it literally had the same script as the original! But one retelling that we have been cautiously optimistic about is David Gordon Green’s passion project: a new version of Dario Argento’s Suspiria. And it may star Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson.

Originally wanting to direct himself, the remake has been through many phases. Back in June of last year, Green revealed that he had found a director, Luca Guadagnino, to take on the film with him still on board to produce. Guadagnino is currently on a press tour for his latest film A Bigger Splash—a drama that stars Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson—and apparently hopes to re-team with his leading ladies sooner rather than later.

While participating in a Q&A this week with writer Philippa Hawker and author/film critic Alex Heller-Nicholas, the director revealed that Swinton and Johnson had signed on to the Suspiria remake. In a tweet, Hawker told Nerdist, “Guadagnino said this in the Q&A. I think it’s as confirmed as anything can be prior to shooting.”

She also noted that the film would be set in Germany in 1977 and that the director has approached composer John Adams to do the music. Finally, Guadagnino said that his version of the Argento horror classic will be heavily influenced by German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Nerdist has reached out for casting confirmation but had yet to hear back at the time of publication. We will update this post as we learn more.

This all sounds pretty innovative, exciting, and original if it comes to pass! Horror fans can certainly only keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best. What are your thoughts on these details about a new Suspiria? Tell us in the comments!
