All Tony Stark needed to create his iconic suit of armor was a cave and a box of scraps (and, you know, a genius-level intellect with loads of engineering knowledge, to boot). However, for laymen like you and me to fly around Iron Man-style, all we’ll need is £340,000 (approximately $445,000). British inventor Richard Browning has created a state-of-the-art “gravity flight suit” that will let you live out your dreams of being one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes without getting all that pesky shrapnel embedded in your heart.

Available for purchase at London department store Selfridges, the jet-powered suit has five miniature jet engines affixed to the arms and the back of the suit, using diesel or jet fuel to launch itself into the air. Created by Browning’s Gravity Industries, the suit, which is comprised largely of electronics and 3D-printed parts, is able to reach speeds of 32 miles per hour and can ascend to an altitude of 12,000 feet, which earned the suit a Guinness World Record.

As expected, using the suit is quite an energy-intensive activity. “This consumes about four litres a minute in the hover [position] so you can fly for three or four minutes quite easily and we have got another version — certainly on a cold day when you get more thrust, it’ll fly for about nine minutes,” Browning told CBC.

While that may not sound particularly impressive to some of you out there, it is the tip of the iceberg for personal flight suits and their fuel efficiency will only increase over time. Browning and his colleagues are already working on developing an electric version, too. Last week it was flying cars; this week it’s flying people. What worries me more is the general ineptitude and clumsiness of the general public once we get our grubby little mitts on them. But that, dear readers, is a problem for future me. In the meantime, we’re getting one step closer to the jet packs we were promised so many moons ago.
