Inked Wednesday #42 – GHOST IN THE SHELL, Iron Maiden, & More

A tattoo is often so much more than body art. If you ask someone about his or her tattoo, chances are good that person will have a story about why it’s there. Example: dozens of fans are getting the “NC” from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro’s Bitch Planet permanently added to their skin. The letters stand for Non-Compliant, and in the comic, women deemed Non-Compliant are imprisoned on Bitch Planet. They can be charged for minor offenses–as minor as speaking up to a man.

The NC logo has become its own movement of sorts. It’s a symbol, and women (as well as men) have embraced it. DeConnick maintains a Pinterest board featuring the tattoos, and The Mary Sue recently interviewed women with the NC tattoo about why they got them. As DeConnick said in an essay in Bitch Planet #4, the tattoo isn’t just about the book. It’s about so much more.
