INJUSTICE 2 Is Officially Announced with a New Trailer

Update: Following yesterday’s below-the-board revelation that we’d be soon seeing Injustice 2 hit shelves, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed the impending release of a sequel to the hit DC Comics fighting game.

On Wednesday morning, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment distributed a press release setting the news in stone and offering a few details about the forthcoming title. Along with returning brutes like Superman, Batman, and Aquaman, Injustice 2 will welcome the likes of Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd, and Atrocitus, presumably among others. Also mentioned are Metropolis, Gotham City, and Atlantis as the locations available in the new game.

Accompanying the press release is the above trailer, in which we glimpse updated moves and armor, and get a brief look at newbie Supergirl in action.

Injustice 2 will release in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In a year full of superhero slugfests, this might be the one that has me the most excited. According to a report from Polygon, leaked promotional materials from GameStop confirm that Injustice 2, a sequel to 2013’s DC Comics fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us, is on the way.

The promo materials were sent to Polygon by an anonymous tipster, who passed along a letter to GameStop managers from corporate announcing that they would be sending the above poster, which features Batman squaring off with The Flash and the tagline “Every battle defines you,” as a free pre-order bonus for the game, which is still unannounced.

Details on the game are sparse. Little is known about the title other than reports that it was in development and rumored to be slated for a March 2017 release. One could surmise that the game will come out for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but this is just speculation until more details emerge, presumably during E3. The real question is whether or not Martha will be an unlockable character.

The original game, developed by Mortal Kombat developers NetherRealm Studios, let you take control of DC Comics’ mightiest heroes and villains to lay the smackdown on one another. Its alternate reality versions of fan-favorite characters became so popular that it spawned a long-running comic book companion series too. These versions of the characters also seem to have heavily influenced Zack Snyder’s vision of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Nerdist has reached out to Warner Bros. Interactive for comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Not everyone was happy with this leak, though. NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon took to Twitter to express his displeasure:

That’s a huge bummer for GameStop because that party sounds like it’s gonna be lit, as cool teens would say.

It’s always a disappointment when a major announcement leaks in advance of the official reveal at E3, but it seems to become an increasingly common occurrence as the years go by. That being said, this is an announcement for which I was keeping my fingers crossed, and I cannot wait to hear more about it at this year’s E3.

In the meantime, can anyone help Ed Boon out with this one?

Stay tuned to Nerdist this week and next for all the latest E3 news. We will be covering the press conferences live, as well as providing updates from the show floor.
