It’s been twenty years since Will Smith and President Bill Pullman saved planet Earth from destruction by hostile aliens and redefined what the world thinks of first when they hear the words “Independence Day.” Now at long last, we have our first look at the sequel Director Roland Emmerich has been working on for the past decade. In a trailer released this weekend, Bill Pullman’s iconic presidential speech echoed over moody shots of Jeff Goldblum and company â foreboding scenes of impending destruction and big-ass alien spaceships.
The studio also dropped an accompanying viral website that fills in the details of the last 20 years of alternate history that followed the “War of 1996” (the name given to the alien battle depicted in the original film). How did we incorporate all of that alien tech into our world? Did all of Earth’s nations unite peacefully like President Whitmore predicted in his rousing speech? What happened to Smith’s Captain Steve Hiller (a.k.a. why isn’t he in this movie)?
