IKEA Japan Unveils the All-Black “Ninja” Hot Dog

I don’t know if there’s something in the air, but Japan is really into its all-black foods.

It feels like just yesterday (because it was) that we were writing about a “pitch black” hamburger, a Studio Ghibli/Tokyo City View promotional food that celebrates the beloved animation house’s Makkuro Kurosuke (soot sprites). Now, as Rocket News 24 reports, IKEA Japan has announced the “ninja dog,” an all-black hot dog that resembles a ninja scroll. As was the case with the Makkuro Burger, the Ninja Dog’s accouterments are colored black with edible bamboo charcoal.

Not convinced yet? Well consider that the sausage is a whopping foot long (which looks extra long relative to it’s eight-inch bun) and will only set you back 300 yen ($2.92)! Want to combo that with a drink? No problem! That’s available for a cool 350 yen. Try finding a Ninja Dog drink combo at a ballgame for less than fifteen bucks—I dare you!

The charcoal colored dog will be available through the 2016 calendar year. One of these weekends, then, why not make a day of it and down both the Ninja Dog and Makkuro Burger on the same day? Maybe you can even unearth the famed Burger King Kuro Burger, a black-bunned hamburger with matching squid ink black sauce. Because that’s the condiment we’ve all always wanted to drip on top of our patties: squid ink black sauce.

Anyone out there ever try that Kuro Burger? Anyone planning to take the Ninja Dog for a test ride? And can anyone explain to us why these foods exists in the first place? Let us know in the comments below.
