IDW Announces GODZILLA: CATACLYSM with Writer Cullen Bunn

Happy Godzilla day! With the new film out in theaters here in the States, publisher IDW just announced that they’re releasing a new monster-y smash-y miniseries over the summer.

It’s called Godzilla: Cataclysm, and it’s from The Sixth Gun (and personal favorite) writer Cullen Bunn. Art is being handled by Dave Wachter (Night of 1,000 Wolves) in what IDW is calling a standalone post-apocalyptic tale.

Here’s the setup for the series from IDW:

Last seen in the monster apocalypse, Godzilla has all but abandoned humanity. In the ashes of a nightmarish future, an elder tribe leader, Hiroshi, is haunted by the monsters of the past that nearly wiped out mankind. As danger begins to escalate for his tribe, the memories of the past may well be the key to saving the future.

If you’re wondering about the big G’s look in the comic, Wachter, in an interview with Multiversity Comics, explained that he’d be sticking with the so-called “Millennium” design for the character (the one used around the aughts with Toho’s last couple of Godzilla films). Here’s why he didn’t fix what wasn’t broke:

I’ve always been impressed with the Millennium re-design. He’s got those cool, huge jagged spines, interesting patterns in the texture of his skin, and that face has tons of personality. It’s extraordinarily difficult to re-create a classic image, and I thought they struck the perfect balance between making something new, and maintaining the classic elements and character that make Godzilla who he is. When I first saw the Millennium design years ago I thought “Yep, that’s Godzilla.”

Godzilla: Cataclysm will launch in August.
