Idris Elba Says His STAR TREK BEYOND Villain Krall is A New Species (Not a Gorn)

The big, bad villain of Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba, has revealed his character’s name and motivations, and he swears he’s not just playing an old character from the original series. Yeah, we’ve heard that before, but this time we believe it.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Elba said that his character, Krall a “predatory” villain full of hatred for the federation, is an entirely new species to the Star Trek universe, meaning (and he answered a direct question about this) he is not a Gorm, the famous lizard man species Captain Kirk defeated on the original series.

Yes, yes, I had the same thought as you; everyone absolutely swore that Benedict Cumberbatch was not Khan in the last film, and we know how that worked out. That actually makes me believe them this time though, because I think they realized it kind of blew up in their face so they won’t make the same mistake twice.

In the trailer for the movie Elba’s voice can be heard saying, “This is where it begins captain; this is where the frontier pushes back.” Elba elaborated on how that reflects his character’s motives, saying that not everyone, especially the independent-minded, see the Federation as the good guys, and Krall will do anything necessary to fight back against it.

As for all that makeup needed for the part, Elba said he was in the chair every day at 4:30 am until 7:30, then on set until 9:00, before having to do it all over again the next day. Even more remarkable is that he said he’s claustrophobic and didn’t like having the rubber masks on his face.

Why anyone would want to cover up his face in the first place is weird anyway.

Star Trek Beyond opens on July 22, 2016.
