The classic holiday tale A Christmas Carol has so many adaptations that there is a (pretty long) Wikipedia page specifically for listing them, but it seems there still aren’t enough versions of the story. Specifically, there aren’t enough versions of A Christmas Carol that star Ice Cube, but all will be right soon, as the rapper will play Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming Universal movie, Humbug.
But don’t worry: this won’t be your father’s A Christmas Carol! This time, Ice Cube’s Scrooge will be âa wealthy real estate mogul,â who is, like other Scrooges before him, âshown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.â The flick will be directed by Tim Story, who previously directed Ice Cube in Ride Along. If you ignore the critics (the movie has an 18 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes), Ride Along was actually a hit, since it grossed $153 million on a $25 million budget.
Perhaps Ice Cube as Scrooge won’t be a catastrophe. He seems to have a couple impressive qualifications: Ice Cube is one of the coldest dudes out there, perfect for playing the closed-hearted Scrooge. He may even be colder than a bottle of Coors Light. Secondly, he knows how to get in the holiday spirit: last month was only August, but he got ahead of schedule and made a family Christmas card with his son on Conan. So that’s something.
