A lot of people ask me how I have a popular twitter account without being a celebrity. It’s really not that difficult, provided you having something to say. So here are some simple tips for being a noteworthy tweeter.
1) You have to be WORTH following. People ask me all the time how they can get a lot of followers. Why would ANYONE want to follow you? Are you interesting? Funny? Are you an expert in any particular field? No one wants to follow you to hear how awesome your weekend was (and let’s be honest, it probably wasn’t that awesome), or to read your conversations with friends. Be worthy.
2) Quality over quantity. If someone follows you it’s because they’re interested in you, not obsessed with you. Don’t tweet nonstop. Five or less tweets a day is a good rule of thumb (and a rule I just made up!)
3) Engage with other users who are similar to you. Follow each other and encourage one another. I know a lot of people like to have a clean timeline (myself included) and don’t like to have a bunch of “@” replies. This is fine, but if you are new to twitter I would definitely take the time to reach out via replies. They can always be deleted later. You can also direct message and/or “fav” tweets. Bottom line, be social!
4) Lastly, if you want people to follow you, you have to tweet regularly. Always stick to quality over quantity, but don’t go multiple days without tweeting either. This sounds easy but is actually the hardest one. I have personally helped numerous people set up twitter accounts and blogs where they are excited to start and then abandon the process a week later. No one wants to follow someone with little content who only tweets sporadically.
So to recap: Be Worthy. Quality over Quantity. Engage. Commit.

You may be missing the point, dysomniak. The point I was making was that these tips are not too good, and that perhaps this post isn’t actually meant to be very helpful to new tweeters. The tips are very specific to a certain type of twitter-user – specifically, people who don’t use their twitter as a “personal account.” See item #3, and the mention of a “clean timeline.” It would be more helpful if she said something like, “This is the type of twitter-use I am, and here are some examples of my tweets, and here are the strategies I employ. Instead, we get some baffling references to having a clean timeline, and deleting tweets later, etc.
Nobody said she doesn’t work hard (oh, maybe you did?) to gain followers. This post, however, does not demonstrate hard work to me. This is “Twitter for Olds,” and with odd tips that she barely explains, and without any examples. It isn’t a mystery that people on the Internet tend to flock toward attractive people, and it doesn’t take a genius to notice that the subtext of this article is “follow me follow me follow me!”
Yeah, obviously an attractive woman doesn’t need to work at anything. Real classy guys.
Oh please, the unnumbered tip at the end there is all you needed for this post (the picture!). I did not find any of the other tips to be handy.
I don’t mean this as an insult or any kind of sexist way but it also doesn’t hurt being an attractive woman and tweeting photos of yourself. That will always get you followers. =)
If I had a Twitter account (which I decidedly never will) I would follow Perry Michael Simon solely for his Agent P icon.
You would be suprised how often people do not think of the simplest things! It is easy to feel daunted when you begin something new. I think this was a great article for someone getting started with social media. Remember we are not born with this knowledge. We learned it some where!

I actively block people who follow me via “get ten thousand followers!” apps. Perhaps I’m sentencing myself to Twitter-loneliness.

Anjeanette has over 14,000 followers. I have a grand total of 604 followers. I should listen to Anjeanette.
I need to have lots of people I don’t know follow me so I can feel important. But first, I need to learn how to be important. LET’S GO!
