This weekend, the snarky, smart-ass, and X-Men-adjacent Marvel mercenary, Deadpool, smashed both the fourth wall and box office records in his big screen debut, crashing onto the scene with the biggest R-Rated opening weekend since 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded. But even though the Merc with a Mouth has gone mainstream, Marvel peppered plenty of goodies, subtle nods, and hat-tips to the diehard fans throughout the film. You know, for the OG Pool-heads!
True fans probably noticed some of the filmâs subtle and not so-subtle Easter eggs (in between all of the raunchy humor, super violence, and general feeling of overall fun on-screen), including references to Ryan Reynoldsâ role as Green Lantern, his early appearance as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Hydra Bob, Kevin Feige, Blade, Daredevil, Deadpool creators Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, a post-credits visual reference to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and even a little wink to Spider-Man, as the webslinger is currently buddy-buddy with Deadpool in comic book form.
Join our very own Weapon X, Jessica Chobot, as we round up a few of the Marvel connections, comic book references, and pop culture nods we found at the movies this weekend, on today’s Nerdist News.
