How Fans Uncovered Johnny Depp’s Secret FANTASTC BEASTS Role

At a recent fan event, director David Yates announced that Johnny Depp would be playing a major role in the four upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequels. But now it looks like you won’t have to wait that long to see Depp make his debut in the Harry Potter Cinematic Universe. And we’re talking about it on today’s Nerdist News!

According to USA Today, the erstwhile Edward Scissorhands will actually have a quick cameo in the first Fantastic Beasts movie, due out in just a few weeks. This has left Potter fans wondering what role Depp could possibly be playing and the culprit appears to be none other than Gellert Grindelwald. For those not up on their Potter Pre-History, Grindelwald was an old friend of Dumbledore’s who turned to the dark arts and tried to start the very first Wizarding World War. (For more on Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s relationship, check out our Fantastic Beasts theory from a few weeks back… which turned out to be true!)

Warner Bros has confirmed that the first Wizarding World War will serve as the backdrop for much of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, meaning they’d probably want a star of Depp’s caliber to take on a major role like Grindelwald. Eagle-eyed fans have also pointed out that while all we’ve seen of Grindelwald in the trailer is the back of his head, it does really resemble the back of Depp’s head.

So while it does seem likely that Depp will be playing Grindelwald, that news hasn’t been met with the warmest welcome. Since Depp’s casting was announced yesterday, Twitter has erupted with complaints; ranging from people who feel Depp’s brand of quirky over-acting is starting to get old to those who take issue with the actor’s recent personal problems.

But regardless of who he’s playing or how the fans feel, Johnny Depp is going to be a fixture of Fantastic Beasts. How will that affect your enjoyment of the films? Let us know in the comments.
