Happy Presidents Day, horror fans! It was a jam packed week in genre news, so we have an extra edition of Horror Happenings today with casting details on the supernatural action flick The Great Wall, details on the upcoming horror anthology Holidays, and the trailer for the critically acclaimed festival favorite Spring from Resolution directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.
Willem Dafoe joins The Great Wall with Matt Damon
Stop the presses, ladies and gentlemen! Today in Horror Happenings, I am bringing you a story about an original idea that is being turned into a movie! Is it Presidents Day or April Fools’ Day? Of course, this is for real brought to you by Legendary Pictures, spanning from an idea created by the production company’s head man Thomas Tull and genre favorite Max Brooks.
While details on Dafoe’s character are being kept quiet, THR explains that The Great Wall follows Damon as “a soldier who is part of a group of mercenaries traveling to China in order to bring back gunpowder to Europe. When the group is attacked by mystical beasts, the man finds himself in a war between a secret warrior clan and the beasts.” Zhang Yimou will be in the director’s chair, with production scheduled to begin in April of this year.
Starry Eyes Directing Duo to Helm Valentine’s Day Segment in Holidays Anthology
There’s some fun news about the upcoming anthology film Holidays, which has attracted directing talent like Kevin Smith, Nicholas McCarthy, and Gary Shore. Last week Bloody Disgusting announced that Starry Eyes directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer will be directing the Valentine’s Day segment.
Widmyer explained why the holiday was perfect for their segment, saying, “We like to tell stories about obsessive characters that end in ways the audience may find darkâ but from the perspective of these unstable characters, actually are happy endings. Sort of like morbid fairy tales. Valentineâs Day is the perfect setting for a story of this nature. What better subject matter to explore themes of obsession than love? It provides the perfect tapestry for weaving a twisted tale of a love so sickly sweet it will touch your inner fiend.â
Those who watched their 2014 indie favorite Starry Eyes know this to be true. For those who haven’t watched it yet, it gets a big “recommend” from me! Holidays is expected to be released later in 2015.
Offical Spring Trailer Released
A few weeks ago, we brought you the exclusive announcement from directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead that their festival favorite Spring would be getting an official poster and trailer release in the coming weeks. Now the trailer is here, and from the looks of it, only hints at what is to come for the romantic genre bender. While I still haven’t seen the movie, I’ve heard nothing but good things about it and can only imagine that this will be a case of the less you know, the better.
Watch the trailer right now below! Spring, directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, hits theaters and VOD on March 20, 2015.
