HORROR HAPPENINGS: THE PURGE 3 Is A Go, John Carpenter’s Lost Themes and more!

As we find ourselves one week closer to All Hallow’s Eve, the horror news keeps on coming and this week Horror Happenings is bringing you updates on the female anthology XX, Ghostbusters 3 plus another installment of The Purge coming your way and some lost music from The Horror Master Mr. John Carpenter!

The Purge 3 Is Officially A Go

In the no-brainer-est of horror news, this week it was confirmed that a third installment of The Purge franchise was officially a go. What was not 100% a no-brainer is if writer/director James DeMonaco would return. Deadline reports that the first two films budgets totaled $12m and have gone on to take in about $200M worldwide. That is ridiculous money, you guys.

When I spoke with Frank Grillo before the release of The Purge: Anarchy this summer, he was asked about a possible third installment of the franchise and had this to say, “[T]here’s already been talks about what do we want to do with the third one. Where do we go with the third one… There’s an interesting concept with the revolution of it all with Michael K. Williams and [his character] Carmelo and the resistance…”

Female Directed Anthology Film XX To Be Produced By Magnet Releasing

Late last year, news of a female directed horror anthology with all female leads title XX hit the web and boasted directing talent including Mary Harron (American Psycho), Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body) and Jovanka Vuckovic (the upcoming Jacqueline Ess), who is also serving as a producer on the project. It was announced this week that Magnet Releasing will be handling distribution and genre fans can expect to see the movie sometime in 2015. While there’s still time, perhaps The Babadook director Jennifer Kent could contribute in some way? I don’t even love the idea of XX, honestly I’m just impatient for more scary awesome from Kent. A girl can dream, right?

All of Are You Afraid of the Dark? Now Available to Stream Online!

Because spending October inside watching scary movies is what Halloween is all about, now you can cozy up with The Midnight Society and relive all of the Nickelodeon series online! I shall echo Nerdist’s own Mr. Kyle Anderson in giving a plug for the episode that scared me the most as a child, Zebo the Clown in “The Tale of Laughing in the Dark.” Terrifying. Seriously.

Ghostbusters 3: Hey Girl Is Happening For Realsies, Y’all; Hires Screenwriter of The Heat

Alright, I made the “Hey Girl” part up. But Ghostbusters 3 is on the fast track with director Paul Feig confirming that Katie Dippold, screenwriter of The Heat, has been brought onto the project to write the script. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the Ghostbusters would now be a female team, and the project would launch a new series instead of being connected to the earlier movies.” There is no production timeline to date but original director Ivan Reitman will produce.

I’m curious as to what that multi-track machine is behind them. Looks a LOT more portable than the ones I used to work with when I was in school. Also, the ashtray and cup sitting on the keyboard just makes me cringe!
