Horror Happenings: STARRY EYES Team Finds Their Next Feature, Ciarán Foy Reteaming with Blumhouse

For fans interested in the future of the genre, it was a week full of announcements detailing exciting new directors being paired with their next projects. From “Based on a true story” to Blumhouse, here’s what we have to look forward to down the line.

Starry Eyes Pair Land Their Next Feature

The independent feature Starry Eyes was essentially tied with Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook for most horror fans’ best of 2014. Now, writer/director duo Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch have announced their next project: they will rewrite Oculus duo Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard’s initial draft of Exorcism Diaries and bring it to the big screen for Summit Entertainment. The premise of the story is fairly simple and based on the true life case that inspired the novel The Exorcist; according to THR, the movie revolves around “a young woman, fresh out of rehab and looking to make amends, who discovers her family’s horrifying connection to the most famous exorcism of all time may be the cause behind her brother’s increasingly violent behavior.”

While the basic story doesn’t sound like anything we haven’t seen before, these are the two guys who made the story of an aspiring actress willing to do anything she can to get ahead in Hollywood one of the best original movies of the year last year. I’m willing to bet that when they’re done putting their spin on the story, it’s going to be something dark and compelling. Widmyer and Kolsch directed a segment in the upcoming horror anthology film Holidays, which expects to see a release in 2016.

Citadel and Sinsiter 2 Director Ciarán Foy Reteaming with Blumhouse Productions

This weekend Ciarán Foy’s Sinister 2 hit theaters and just this week it was announced that Foy would make The Shee for Blumhouse Productions, as well. Foy previously wrote and directed the independent horror movie Citadel and which was a hit on the festival circuit. Deadline describes The Shee as being set in the 1960’s in Foy’s native Ireland and “the story of a troubled young woman who must confront her violent and tragic past when she travels to a remote island.”

“Shee” is a reference to creatures from Irish and Scottish folklore that live in invisible worlds coexisting with the world of humans.

What do you think, horror friends? Are you looking forward to seeing what’s next from Widmyer and Kolsch and Ciarán Foy? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
