HORROR HAPPENINGS: GOODNIGHT MOMMY Duo’s Next, OUTCAST Promo, and More!

Happy Sunday, horror friends! After last weekend’s trailer-filled Sunday, this week we’ve got updates on some very exciting people and things from books to TV to film. Let’s get to it!

Goodnight Mommy Directing Duo’s Next

Last year, Goodnight Mommy was the indie horror flick that shocked and terrified audiences with dreadful atmosphere and great performances. The slightly skewed modern fairy tale from Austrian filmmakers Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz was well-received by critics and genre fans alike. Now the writer/director team is in final negotiations with Universal Pictures for their first studio feature.

THR reports that The Fortress is a pitch directly from Fiala and Franz, who will write and direct the original feature film said to tell the story of “a group of refugees hidden aboard a container ship who discover their passage to safety is not what it seems.” Heavyweight producer Michael De Luca, who was behind films like The Social Network, Captain Phillips, and the Fright Night remake, will produce. It’s exciting to hear that Fiala and Franz are getting back behind the camera after their powerful stateside debut. It will be fun to see what they bring to the table once a bigger budget and studio is involved.

This New Promo for Outcast Is Not Messing Around!

It’s safe to say that Robert Kirkman’s brand is on fire. With The Walking Dead season finale airing tonight and the internet bracing itself for a meltdown, his next TV project promises to take terror and tension and turn it up to 11. I’m talking, of course, about Outcast, the supernatural drama based on the comics of the same name created by Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta. The books have been adapted into a live action series set to debut on Cinemax on Friday, June 3, that has already been renewed for a second season. Starring Patrick Fugit, Philip Glenister, and Wrenn Schmidt, Outcast is getting some great buzz ahead of its premiere. Cinemax has released an all new promo that is unlike anything we’ve seen for the show yet. While we know to expect some serious drama from the series, here we’re getting a look into the hardcore horror that is coming for Kyle Barnes and those around him.

Take a look at the teaser below!

Doctor Sleep Adaptation Could Be Coming to the Big Screen

Stephen King adaptations are so hot right now, you could call them Hansel. Hulu has the James Franco-starring, J.J. Abrams-produced 11.22.63; The Dark Tower officially cast Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey; It is currently being developed at New Line; The Stand is in the works. One source that may never stop providing new adaptations is King’s iconic The Shining. In addition to Stanley Kubrick’s magnificent feature and the TV mini-series written by King himself, we know that Glen Mazzara has been working on a script for Overlook Hotel, a feature film prequel to The Shining. On top of that, it’s looking like Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman will adapt the novel sequel Doctor Sleep into a movie.

Released in the fall of 2013, Doctor Sleep sees a grown up Danny Torrence working very hard to avoid following in his father’s destructive footsteps. The novel was generally well received following its release and, according to Tracking Board, Goldsman will be the one to bring it to the big screen. On the one hand, Goldsman is clearly a fan of both genre and King, so that’s exciting! But, on the other hand, well, he’s been involved in some adaptations that are less awesome than others, such as I Am Legend (nothing like Richard Matheson’s horror masterpiece) and The 5th Wave. I am cautiously optimistic here, and would like to spend more time in the world established by The Shining, if, and only if, the adaptations stay true to the horror of the novels. But if we’re being honest, Kubrick’s film didn’t really stay faithful to The Shining in the first place.

What say you, readers? Are you looking forward to Overlook Hotel and Doctor Sleep? Tell us in the comments!
