Hi there, horror friends! While I still have not recovered from our incredible time at Fantastic Fest, horror never sleeps and some really cool genre news came to light this week. Let’s get to it!
James Wan Bringing The Boy Who Drew Monsters to the Silver Screen
I don’t know about you, but I am a big James Wan fan. It’s been fun for me as an audience member to see a director who showed so much promise with his feature film debut Saw grow into one of the most well-received young filmmakers working today, both in and out of the genre. While Wan began production directing The Conjuring 2 a few weeks ago, it was recently announced that he will be producing the big screen adaptation of The Boy Who Drew Monsters. The book revolves around a young boy who is both agoraphobic and has Asperger’s. As a coping mechanism, he begins to draw — however, his illustrations also begin to come to life, including some pretty scary monsters.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the book as “part drama, part ghost story and part creature feature.” The original novel was written by Keith Donohue and New Line has hired Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing to write the script. Wan himself has a busy slate overseeing a handful of films already announced under his production deal for New Line and will direct Jason Momoa as Aquaman in the standalone film for Warner Bros.
The Exorcist Steps To Be Commemorated in D.C. on October 30!
Attention all horror fans living in the American northeast: mark your calendars for October 30, when the infamous “Exorcist Steps,” located at Georgetown in Washington, D.C., will become an official landmark! Director William Friedkin will be on hand to celebrate the occasion (and the 42nd anniversary of the seminal horror movie) as will William Peter Blatty who wrote the novel the movie was based on. Friedkin will do a meet-and-greet and signing from 4-6PM, followed by the plaque unveiling at the bottom of the “Exorcist Steps.” Later that night, there will be an invite-only screening of The Exorcist at the AMC Loews Georgetown theater. If that’s not the perfect way to spend Halloween eve, I don’t know what is!
