In the early â90s, there was a time when Segaâs Sonic the Hedgehog only true rival was Nintendoâs Super Mario. In fact, Sonic might have been even more popular than Mario at the height of the 16-bit console wars!
But times change, and so too did Sonic…but not for the better. While the Super Mario games maintained their popularity by continuing to innovate, Sega has apparently never been able to recapture the intangible qualities that made the first Sonic games so much fun to play. Thatâs one of the many reasons that Sonic has transformed from Marioâs distinguished competition into a special guest star on the Wii U.
This weekâs Honest Gaming Trailer from Smosh Games throws its spotlight on the Sonic series and it articulates one of the biggest problems with the franchise: the games require the players to go fast, but then the level design punishes them for doing so!
Amazingly, the Honest Trailer barely touches on Shadow the Hedgehog a.k.a. âthe hedgehog with a gun.â But thereâs still plenty of lunacy to go around as one of the all-time gaming franchises slowly collapses in on itself.
Not even the hardcore Sonic fans escape unscathed, as the Honest Trailers team offers a brief glimpse of the furry madness. Hereâs a free google tip: never search for Sonic fan art without the âsafesearchâ feature enabled. Trust us on that one.
