The legendary big man that once wore the purple and gold for the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille O’Neal, took the the stage at the 2015 Video Game Awards to announce Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, and it looks nuts. The title was funded on Indiegogo, and will be making an appearance on home consoles. We got a better look at the game with the above trailer, which has some great gameplay footage and even hilarious story elements. Let the nostalgia overcome you.
We can all agree that the original title wasn’t the instant classic the Big Diesel (Shaq) thought it would be. It became a cult classic because it was so incredibly silly, and this new iteration seems to keep that same tradition. Graphically, it looks pretty polished, and Shaq’s muscles are definitely very pronounced. Most importantly, though, the classic beat em’ up action is there, and it looks much more fun than the original. You can expect to use many weapons, battle tough bosses, and even play with friends via co-op mode. I appreciate that there’s an emphasis on trying to make this into a quality game that many will enjoy. We’ll see how that goes.
I’m just glad the big fella still doesn’t take himself too seriously, even after his career as an NBA legend has ended. It’s also interesting that many more athletes are getting more hands-on with the video game world.
