In case the trailers, graphic novel prequel, or limited edition Odd City prints hadn’t sold you on Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming giant robots vs. giant monsters magnum opus Pacific Rim, maybe Hideo Kojima will. The outspoken video game designer and creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise took to Twitter today to offer up some thoughts on del Toro’s latest labor of love. Just how much did Kojima-san enjoy it? Let him tell you in his own words.

Strong words coming from the Metal Gear Solid creator, which is notable for mammoth mechs, silly names, and over the top action in its own right. Logically, the next step is to have Kojima and del Toro collaborate on something, so that millions of nerds – myself included – can die happy.

My wife and I are super-excited to see it this Friday in 3-D. Unfortunately I fear (ever so slightly) that this film may suffer from a little generational gap; young people today did not grow up with Ultraman, Gojira, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, Gamera, Daimajin plus Astro Boy, Robotech and the rest of the Kaiju and Anime we all took for granted growing up in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I heard from my nephew (in his late 20’s) that he thought the film was visually stunning but blasted the story which makes me a bit frustrated. I think his expectations were too modern (or up-to-date) for a film like this. He admitted that he has not seen many old Kaiju films or TV series so I think that may be a part of the issue. Sure, there is a ton of Anime today with giant robots, but those of us who are a bit older than the youth of today have a special place in our hearts for giant Mechas and Monsters that are at the core of a film like Pacific Rim…this film is a dream come true for my wife and I. Thanks Guillermo del Toro!
I’m still skeptical…
While I’ll agree the concept is good.
If it were Japanese, there wouldn’t be “mindless leviathans” attacking for pretty much no other reason than “That’s just what they do”. The story would have focused around what they were and what did they come here for.
Hasn’t anyone here ever seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, Big O, Stellvia, or the movie Voices of a Distant Star?
Pretty much any modern Japanese anime, that focuses around giant robots vs giant monsters, also focuses on figuring out why exactly are they attacking.
So unless that’s something they take into account and explore in this movie (which I doubt, from the trailers anyway) then it’s missing a big element that would have put it up there with the previously mentioned titles.
I could be wrong, and I really hope I am, but I do get the feeling this is a ‘less in-depth’ story.
But, like I said in a previous post about it, I’m sure the kids will love it. (Giant Robots vs Monsters + Splosions + a little drama here + a little comedy there + a hot asian co-star ‘for good measure’ = Box Office Gold) right?
If Kojima likes mecha so much, then where is Zone of the Enders 3? :/
Is it bad that you’re a girl and you’ve been waiting for this movie to come out? None of my friends wanna see it with me so I resorted to taking comicon buddies.
I’ve been waiting for this movie for 2 years! as a big fan of huge robot i am glad i got ticket to watch it next Thursday, 3D version!
Every girl I have talked to about it seems disinterested in the movie, every guy is hyped as f**k. Let’s hope that all the guys drag their girlfriends to see it, something like a reverse romantic comedy.
Charlie Day is in this. Therefore it is worth your money.

Yeah, seriously. It doesn’t get much more Japanese than this concept. But I’ve been stoked for this movie since I saw it’s announcement at Comic-Con last year (Comic-Con is only two weeks away!) and am eagerly awaiting this and Elysium to satiate what’s been an amazing summer for sci-fi and comic book movies. Oh, and if Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima did something together… jesus, it would be so much visual stimulation and ridiculous, impossible to dissect narrative that your mind would explode.
I knew Asians were gonna love this…Japan is gonna crap it’s pants. This movie is their dream come true.
